07/13/12: Charlie Brown
is ADOPTED!!!!
03/22/12: The Only
Negative About Charlie
Brown Is That He is
Heartworm Positive
We
received an email
regarding a boxer in a
rural shelter who was
scheduled to be killed
the following morning. A
saint of a woman named
Nancy who lives near the
shelter has dedicated
her life to finding
homes for as many of
these impounded dogs as
she can. This shelter
does not adopt to the
public and Nancy is the
only person who they
allow to come into the
shelter to take dogs.
They are only required
to keep strays for 3
days and the kennels
were all full.
The email was sent to 11
people involved with
Boxer Rescue; we were
drawn to the photo and
felt confident that this
poor boxer boy would be
rescued since the plea
was sent to so many
contacts. However, his
haunting eyes compelled
us to call about him the
evening before he was
going to be killed to
make sure he was safe.
Surprisingly, we were
told that NBR was the
only Rescue that got
back to Nancy.
The next day we had an
agonizing day waiting
for word that he was
still alive. Nancy was
not able to get in touch
with anyone at the
shelter and, although
she left messages
stating she found a
Rescue to take him, no
one returned her call.
Finally, at 4PM Nancy
received the calls...it
was OK to get him.
Everyone sighed with
relief.
When
Nancy went to the
shelter to pick up this
boxer boy, she was told
“you don't want to take
this dog....he's too
old”. (Note: This
shelter routinely kills
young puppies! At 4-5
years of age this dog,
appallingly, is
considered old.) We can
not stress enough how
tragic it would have
been to let this sweet
dog die. Our foster
mom's daughter named
this boxer Charlie
Brown, and he is an
AMAZING dog who has
proven in a very short
time that he is 'the
best of the best'.
Charlie Brown is a
male brindle boxer who
is approximately 4-5 yrs
of age. He was picked up
by animal control as a
stray running down the
road with two other
dogs. Luckily we were
able to find a foster
home for Charlie Brown
and he has been
incredibly friendly to
every person, dog, cat,
and baby goat he has
met. He is very laid
back, is great in the
house (no accidents),
and an all around super
dog.
Unfortunately, Charlie
Brown has tested a high
positive for heartworm
disease. He has a return
appointment with the vet
to further assess his
condition and to discuss
a treatment plan. More
medical information will
be posted after his
visit with the doctor.
Below is a brief
update for Charlie
Brown's foster mom:
“Charlie Brown
is exceptionally well
mannered and extremely
gentle. He does well
with cats, small and
large dogs, and
children. He has done
great for
everything...the only
thing he was not fond of
was the bath. He had
several ticks that were
removed.
He was
dewormed today and he
had a DHPP vaccine and a
Rabies vaccine. Although
he was heartworm
positive he was negative
for any tick borne
diseases. Charlie Brown
loves to play and is
very affectionate. He
will make a great family
dog and companion.”
