06/18/12: An update from
their foster mom:
"Josephine and Penny
have been such a joy to
have around since I
picked them up from the
vet after their spay
surgery. They both
recovered quickly and
have really developed
their personalities in
the last ten days. They
love to play with each
other and with their
toys. They are also so
curious about everything
from my rabbits to my
cats and our three other
dogs to all of their
surroundings. Penny is a
real cuddle bug she
loves to just relax and
sit in your lap or next
to you. Josephine is so
independent which is
amazing since she is
blind, you really would
never know. She wants to
play with all of the
other dogs and she likes
to explore and sniff
everything. They really
seem to love everyone
they have met so far and
everyone who has met
these guys loves them
too. They are just the
easiest dogs I have
taken care of."
03/26/12: Josephine and
Penny Have Finally
Touched Ground -
Literally Two
More Reasons To Ban
Puppy Mills
Meet Penny and
Josephine; mother and
daughter. The conditions
these dogs came from
were deplorable. Both
were born in a puppy
mill and have lived
their entire life in a
cage. This particular
puppy mill had more than
100 breeding dogs! The
picture gets
darker…Josephine is
blind.
This
darling pair of
Pekingese found their
way to NBR through the
rescue angel, Nancy.
(Note: This is the same
woman that contacted us
about the boxer Charlie
Brown who we recently
took into our program).
The information given to
Nancy was that the
mother was about 8 years
old and the daughter was
about 1 year old and
blind. She was also
told, “either one could
be pregnant”. Nancy
asked us if we knew
anyone who would take
this pair; their story
broke our heart....Of
course, “NBR”.
We
immediately contacted
one of our volunteers,
Sarah. On a moments
notice she picked them
up and took them into
her home for the
weekend. It was a
weekend of 'firsts'. The
dogs experienced their
'first' time walking on
grass, which they
thoroughly enjoyed. And
for the 'first' time in
their lives, these two
wonderful dogs had
names…Josephine and
Penny. Sarah said they
reminded her of her
beloved guinea pigs. =)
'First' Update from
Foster Mom:
“So I
decided to name these
guys Josephine (
lighter, younger one)
and Penny (older, darker
one) mostly because when
they romp around the
yard they remind me very
much of my long haired
guinea pigs that romped
around the yard that
have since passed away.
When I weighed
them they both each
weighed in at around 9
lbs. So they are pretty
small. These guys are
already super sweet they
like to give kisses and
be loved and held. Since
Josephine is blind you
can startle her if you
just reach out and pet
her and it's better to
be slow and let her
smell you first.
In the little time I
have had the pleasure of
taking care of them I
have noticed that
Josephine is pretty
adventurous exploring
the house and yard and
Penny is a little more
on the shy side. Penny
likes to stay closer to
me and be petted while
she showers me with
kisses.
So far
these guys have been
great no accidents, they
ate all of their chicken
and rice and have been
super sweet. They have
an appointment scheduled
to see the vet which
will most likely be
their 'first' . These
two little girls are
very endearing and will
make whomever adopts
them very happy.”
