04/03/12: Myles and Oreo Are An Odd Couple With Even Temperaments

A veterinarian who treats some of the dogs in our Rescue program was contacted by a client looking for help with two dogs she had rescued. The veterinarian referred her to NBR and we agreed to step in and help. The woman became aware of the dogs from a co-worker who told her the dogs were living in a dysfunctional drug/alcoholic household. The living conditions were deplorable and they needed to be removed from the situation. Both dogs also needed immediate medical attention.

Myles is a two year old male boxer and Oreo is a one year old Blue Tick Coon Hound mix. Both dogs have a skin condition and were scratching themselves raw from the itchy dermatitis. Despite their background and physical condition, both Myles and Oreo are sweet, affectionate and full of love for everyone they meet. They grew up together, and look out for each other, so they will be need to be placed together.

We made an appointment for Myles and Oreo to see our vet the next day. They both received a complete workup which included a skin scraping. Although the results of the skin scraping were negative, the doctor started the dogs on a topical treatment for suspected sarcoptic mange (scabies). They were prescribed antibiotics for the open sores under their arms and will also need medicated baths every three days. Their ears had an infection as well and, in addition to medication, they were given medicated wipes to clean the ear canals daily. Since they are so thin they are eating three times a day and doing well on this schedule. They have been started on fish oil capsules to help improve their coats. They will be neutered once they get the medical “OK”.

Below is a report from our volunteer who initially went to meet this duo:

“Myles and Oreo are two sweethearts despite what they have lived through. Poor Myles is just scratching himself to death. He has a visible red rash on all his feet, his ear flaps are dry and his overall coat is very dry. I am concerned about the redness and swelling on the front of his lips. Both Myles and Oreo had been eating out of plastic food bowls which may be the possible cause. We were told that their diet consisted of rice and gravy. Oreo was fed first and whatever remained of his meal Myles could finish…so so sad. Simply horrendous!

Myles is really underweight - I'll be surprised if he weighs in at more than 35lbs. He is really a good dog and even in his condition I would call him handsome. He has two enlarged nipples that may be of concern and on the edge of his right ear he has a large scab area. He let me play with his feet and look in his mouth so he does not mind being handled. Myles is a dry mouth so no slime!

Oreo the Blue Tick Hound mix was also scratching himself raw. His coat is in a lot better condition, but still has obvious issues. Oreo is a handsome dog as well, and he is also very sweet."
