04/17/13: Abby is adopted!!!!

04/11/13: Can you believe we're 9 weeks old! A long week for the family

The puppies and Mia are all home from surgery (spay/neuter) and recovering. The puppies are bouncing (literally) back very quickly. The surgery was a little harder on Mia and she is still very sore and tired.

All of the puppies also received their first inoculation and have been wormed once. We did have to get them a bordetella as they are heading to boarding, we were hoping to have homes for them all by this time but sadly we only have 3 approved homes which leaves 7 puppies and Mia in boarding. Please consider fostering or adopting one of these sweet hearts.

Mia had thinning hair so we had a skin scrape done on her, luckily she tested negative for mange. The doctor said it was due to the malnutrition from pregnancy and nursing. We were so ecstatic to hear she is back up to a healthy 54 ponds, her nipples are drying up great and she only needs to put on 3-4 pounds. Mia also received her inoculations, rabies, and bordetella.

It’s been a long week for the Mia bunch and it’s not over yet. Friday and Saturday they are being transported from Georgia to New York where they will be ready for their homes and/or going into boarding. All of these dogs are wonderful, playful and are deserving of loving homes.

04/07/13: Thank God The Pups Are OK

We sighed a collective sigh of relief as the puppies started to respond to the medical treatment prescribed by the ER doctor. They healed quickly and are all back to their normal happy playful selves. We brought them back to the vet for a checkup and the doctor said they have fully recovered. We still aren't sure what made them sick but we are certainly happy that they are all better. The doctor gave the OK to go forward with their spay/neuter surgeries which is scheduled for Tuesday.

Can you believe we're 8 weeks old already!!!!

This is going to be a busy week for "The Mia Bunch". Mia and all of her puppies are getting spayed/neutered. After a couple days of rest they will be transported by a handful of selfless volunteers from Georgia to New York. We will be working with the homes that have been fully approved to adopt their new family members on the 13th or 14th (we are still finalizing transport dates/times). Please consider helping one of these darlings. There are still many of them left waiting to be matched with their forever families. Please apply to adopt or foster these wonderful dogs to spare them from going to the boarding kennel.

04/01/13: Mama Mia's Puppies Gave Us A Terrible Scare - Not Yet Out Of The Woods

Mia's puppies were rushed to the Emergency Room on Sunday after several of the puppies developed bloody diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, and dehydration. Several tests were performed, but there were no conclusive results as to the origin of the puppies symptoms; however, the doctor said whatever they have is highly likely to be infectious. A test for parvo was negative but it is not 100% accurate depending on the stage of the infection. All of the doctor's findings regarding fecal analysis were suggestive of significant large intestinal inflammation (colitis).

The doctor's approach for treatment in the hospital was for supportive care which included giving fluids, antibiotics, and deworming in an attempt to prevent secondary infections. The doctor said that if their symptoms are due to a viral infection, the infection would have to run it's course. The goal of the above mentioned therapies is to support the pup's bodies and prevent life-threatening to fatal complications from developing.

The puppies were stabilized and sent home with a list of instructions and they are being watched closely for any deterioration in their condition. Each puppy will receive daily lactated ringer fluids injected under their skin. They are being fed a bland diet until their diarrhea resolves and will slowly be introduced to their regular food. They will continue to receive antibiotics for 14 days, and will be given another round of deworming medication. Their body temperatures will be monitored closely to detect if any of the puppies are getting sicker.

The puppies have responded extremely well to treatment and we are hopeful that they will continue to improve. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers and consider sending a donation to help us with their mounting medical bills.

TEN Wonderful Puppies

All the arrangements were made to pick up Mama "Mia" yesterday morning in hopes of preventing the puppies from being born at the shelter. To our dismay, we received a call after the staff arrived at the shelter that morning to let us know she had given birth to 5 puppies overnight and that she was still in labor. Our volunteer rushed to the shelter and sat with Mia throughout the day….attending to her and the puppies.

Unfortunately the shelter would not allow us to take mom and pups until they felt she was finished giving birth. 10 puppies later, we were anxious to get mom and pups home but, once again, the shelter felt it best to leave her at the shelter to recover and asked us to return this morning to get them.

When our volunteer Erin called the shelter this morning she was told that there was another puppy born overnight making a total of 11 pups. Sadly, when Erin arrived to pick them up she was told that one of the puppies had died. We had previously arranged for them to visit a Vet and they were all packed in the car for their visit.

The doctor examined Mia and pups and felt they were in fairly good shape considering their ordeal. Thankfully mom’s heartworm test was negative. She also surprisingly had a negative fecal exam. Pups will return to the vet in 3 weeks to be dewormed and get another check-up. The doctor was amazed at Mia’s disposition and made it a point to say how sweet she was throughout the exam. So far so good.

Mia and all 10 puppies have settled into their temporary foster home. Understandably, Mia is a little nervous about being moved but she trusts Erin after spending such quality time with her at the shelter. One thing for certain is that Mama Mia is an excellent mother.

We will report more as the days progress.

02/06/13: "Mama Mia" And Her Puppies Deserve A Better Life

Mia is a very pregnant Pit Bull mix that we felt compelled to help. She was in danger of being killed at a shelter out of our area. We tried desperately to find a local Rescue who would take her but to no avail; Rescues are at capacity.

Mia’s story is appalling and heartbreaking.

The first time Mia found herself in the shelter was this past December. Animal Control found her on the street with a chain around her neck dragging a cinder block. Sadly, she was reclaimed by her owner.

The second time she was confiscated from her owner by Animal Control. Mia was found in an outside pen, in the cold, pregnant and standing knee deep in her own feces. The owner agreed to surrender Mia to avoid any criminal charges. She was removed from the property and brought to the shelter.

One of our volunteers went to visit with Mia and found her to be very gentle and kind. Mia is two years old and weighs about 60 pounds. She is a medium size dog so she will no doubt weigh less after she gives birth. The shelter staff has only good things to say about Mia. She is very sweet and likes to nuzzle her head against you.

We do not want Mia to have her puppies at the shelter so we are making arrangements for our volunteer, Erin, to take her into foster care temporarily. The accommodations for Mia will be small. Erin also has two dogs. This living situation is far from ideal for a mom and pups and we will need to find Mia a foster home where she can raise her babies.

Mia and her pups certainly deserve a better life. This is an URGENT situation and we need your help once again. Foster, Adopt, Donate, and Spread The Word!!!!
