Maria has been back and
forth to the hospital on
numerous occasions
battling her open
sore/infection on her
paw that will not heal.
The vet had been doing
laser treatments and it
seemed to be getting
better, but then took a
turn in the wrong
direction. She is on
heavy-duty antibiotics
and we are all hoping
she won't lose her leg.
The volunteers in PR
have been trying
everything they can to
make Maria well. She
will need a health
certificate to be
brought over to the U.S.
and, at this point, we
believe Maria is not
going to be able to
leave the island for
awhile longer.
On
the positive side, Maria
appears to be a true
treasure. She has a
wonderful disposition,
adores every human and
dog alike, and is
relentlessly upbeat even
in the face of this
painful injury--not to
mention the unbelievable
nightmare she went
through alone on that
beach.
Please
keep Maria in your
thoughts and prayers.
02/05/13: Maria Tried in
Vain To Fend For Herself
In Puerto Rico
Maria was rescued off of
a beach in Puerto Rico
where many dogs are
dumped and left to die.
Maria was one of the
lucky dogs who was
rescued by an amazing
organization who does
their best to help as
many dogs as possible.
We have successfully
worked with this group
previously and are
hoping we can
collaborate once again
to help Maria.
Maria was literally
starving and in
extremely bad condition.
The photos you see were
taken a month after she
was taken off the
streets so you can
imagine how terrible she
looked when she was
found. Maria was rescued
right before Christmas
and taken directly to a
veterinarian where she
was diagnosed with both
sarcoptic and demodectic
mange.
The vet
thinks Maria is less
than one year old
despite her appearance
of age….Struggling for
life with no food on a
beach will do that. Her
condition has improved
significantly. A recent
skin scraping indicates
that the sarcoptic mange
is gone but she is still
being treated for the
demodex. She is also
receiving laser
treatments for a lesion
on her foot which should
help the healing
process.
When
you watch the video of
Maria it is clear she is
a special girl. She is
the epitome of a
wonderful canine soul
who shows nothing but
kindness in the face of
horrible human neglect.
Sadly we have no
foster homes for Maria
or any of the other dogs
we have been asked to
help.
We are
doing everything we can
to buy these dogs some
time and we are
desperate for your help.
If you have ever
considered fostering a
dog now is the time to
give it a try. The lives
of these dogs depend on
you…We cannot save them
without your assistance.
PLEASE HELP, yes we
are begging….These dogs
need you to live
