05/06/03 - Grace

Meet our new special girl who is aptly named Grace. Grace is approximately 1 year old and was born with a condition called 'etopic ureter'. Both of the tubes (ureters) that go from the kidneys to the bladder had to be rerouted to the proper position and connected. She has already had the surgery, but is still having some minor leaking of urine. However she is now being treated with medications that we hope will control the leakage. She is incredibly sweet, is good with children and other dogs, and is sure to make someone very happy. Below is a report from her foster mom.

“Grace is a sweetie-and-a-half! She is a mush when it comes to wanting affection from you (rubbing against your leg, jumping into your lap, etc.). She is a great friend to our year and a half year old male Boxer named K.O. – they play rough, despite her petite build, and love it. She also plays great by herself and is learning to interact playfully with people as well. Truth is she would much rather a belly rub than a game of tug of war. She does have a few special needs. Grace was born with the tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder out of place . This has been surgically repaired and she is doing wonderfully. Grace is totally potty-trained and goes on command. After she has relieved herself she has a slight drip for about 20 minutes afterward. We take this time to take her on a walk or send her to run tirelessly back and forth across the yard with K.O. She is on medication to help control and possibly heal this and eats special food to go easy on her digestive system. None of this has been the hassle that we were warned it might be. She is too lovable to be a problem. She needs a little time to warm up to other dogs but, once she understands that they are not a threat, she becomes fast friends with them. She does not like to be alone and has expressed it loudly to us. But if she is left with company (dog or human) she is happy, quiet, and well-behaved. She is a great watch dog and has taught our boy some great lessons in home protection. She knows ‘sit, shake, down, go potty, and come here.’ It is hard to believe that her past owners would give her up. She has been a delight to have around.”
