08/17/09: LOOK AT ME NOW !  AUGUST 2009 UPDATE:

Just checking in with a recent photo of Bentley (NBR#2302), We're doing great. He's about 6 now and starting to get a little grey around the nose. The older he gets the calmer he gets, but he's still a handful at the vet. Fortunately he's been very healthy. I see him everyday at lunch and my mom visits him most afternoons, so he's never alone for more than 4 or 5 hours. He's been a great companion and a very good match. Thank you for the great work you do with these wonderful dogs.

1/10/06 - Bentley has been adopted!!

10/6/05 -

" I have been fostering Bentley since January 2005, and this sweet boy has come along way.  Although we spent the summer apart Bentley enjoyed his stay in a doggy training camp.  There he learned self-control , and that all people are not scary. Camp was also very fun for Bentley as he got to play with all different breeds of dogs.

When Bentley came home from camp a month ago he immediately headed outside to dig out his favorite things to play with... THE LOGS !!!   Once he gets started on the logs he will keep himself entertained for long periods of time.  He also loves playing ball and fetch and he especially loves playing with his older foster brother Major, but seems to respect that Major is older and doesn't have the same puppy energy as he does.. Bentley can go on forever.

I give him 3 cups of dry food in the morning and 3 at night but he doesn't always want to eat it all.  Since he has a problem sharing food with other an animals I feed him in a separate room and sit with him while he eats..  I find that if I leave the room he will just sit at the door and wait until I come back, and then he will continue to eat.  Bentley is more interested in playing than eating, and with the high energy level that he has it's hard to keep him plump.  It may take years for him to become a "Pork Chop"  but that's ok, as long as he stays healthy.

Bentley is a very high energy 24 month old who would fit in well with another Boxer with the same energy level.  He also needs to be in a completely fenced in yard with lots of room to play.  Since Bentley still may be a bit shy around strangers I feel that a home with children or cats would not be a good home for Bentley.  However, he is very loving and loves to snuggle.

7/4/05 - Foster Home Needed

"Bentley has been wonderful!  As far as puppy energy, lets just say he is one healthy dog!  He can go all day and then some.  He loves to occupy himself with chew toys, tennis balls, etc.

Bentley is currently living with 3 dogs.  Unfortunately, he does not get along with one of the dogs and we can't blame Bentley for any of this.  Bentley needs a new foster home or permanent home as soon as possible.  This is very sad for my wife and I since we love him dearly and he loves us right back with all of his heart.

We feel a perfect home for Bentley is one with a fenced in yard and another dog (or dogs)  within his same age range and energy level.  While in our care, Bentley has been able to spend time with our friend's male boxer (same age) and it was a perfect fit.  They played all day long and were sleeping soundly by the end of the day.  A tired dog is a good dog!  All of our dogs are middle age and they all get pooped out much sooner than Bentley.

Bentley needs and deserves a family that has patience, love, and understanding.  We feel he has had a rough start to his life.  He shows hesitation and uneasiness around strangers.  We see this so often with rescue dogs.  Most likely, he was not properly socialized as a puppy.  This is where the patience and love comes into play.  Bentley is a great dog who needs an opportunity with a great family."

2/24/05 - Update from Foster Home:

"Bentley has come a long way since I first picked him up.  So far he has gained 10 lbs. but still needs to gain more weight.  He's very healthy and very active.  He's getting better with accepting strangers but still needs some work in that area.  Once he has a chance to get familiar with a stranger he warms up to them pretty quickly.

He gets along great with my dog Major and knows when Major has had enough playtime.  For the most part Bentley can entertain himself with his toys, but he also likes to play fetch.  When he gets tired his favorite spot is curled up next to you under his blanket.

Bentley needs to be in a home with a fenced in yard and with someone who can spend most of the day with him.  He still has the occasional accident in the house...but we are making progress.  Another dog in the house would be a plus for Bentley but without young children.  This sweet boy would thrive with a family that has patience and the willingness to work on his social skills."

2/13/05 - Update from Foster Home:

"Bentley has been in my care just over 2 weeks now.  He was checked a second time at the vet and he is very healthy now.  He's gaining weight steadily and has become more active. Actually he's starting to act like a normal 15 month old Boxer.  He's starting to realize that he can walk away from a toy and it will still be there when he returns.  At times he gets obsessed with one toy and that's when I notice he gets himself too worked up, so I just simply take the object (ball, toy tire, bone, etc....) away from him and let him calm down.  He will jump up and try to steal it from me, but he's not good at that game yet !!!!!

I started socializing him this past week, he's still very nervous when people first walk in the house so I put him in a crate when they arrive so he feels safe.  Bentley will get vocal but then he'll just sit and observe while his foster brother Major plays and gives his best Boxer wiggles for the guests.  Once Major has calmed down I then open Bentley's crate and he comes out to greet the stranger.  He'll usually go to Major before he does anything, then from there he's more interested in getting a cookie for being in his crate.  I still don't think it's a good idea to bring children around him at this time.  In the evenings after a few rounds of playing fetch he just wants to curl up against me and snuggle under a blanket.  He really is a sweetie and would definitely make a great companion to someone who has plenty of time for him and lots of love."

1/25/05 - Update from Foster Home:

"I began fostering Bentley 2 days ago.  When I was first introduced to him he was nervous and gave a few quiet growls as if to say he was afraid.  Once I got him home and introduced him to my big Boxer boy Major it didn't take him long to warm up to us.  I tried him in a crate and he doesn't seem to like being in it at all, so today he has his very own room with his own dog bed and a couch with a window view while I'm not home.

He love's to cuddle and has to be up against you if not on you.  When he sleeps at night he prefers to be up near your head sharing the pillow... and he definitely likes to be covered with a nice soft blanket.  Today I am buying him a sweater and booties because he gets so cold due to the fact that he is so thin.  His feet start to bother him if outside more than 5 minutes.

So for now I'm going to keep him calm and feed him lots of boiled meat and rice mixed in with his dog food and hopefully we can get some weight on him.  A stool sample has been taken to the veterinary hospital to make sure he does not have any parasites.  I haven't had him around strange people or children as of yet but I will work on it once I feel he is ready.  More updates to follow as we get to know him better."

1/7/05 - Bentley

Bentley is a very sweet dog who was surrendered to rescue by a young man who could no longer care for him due to long hours at his new job.

Bentley loved his family, including young children but  has not had a lot of experience with new people. He is currently being socialized at a doggie daycare where he is getting along with both people and dogs and doing tremendously well.

Since he has had no issues in his new setting we feel he will do well with a family that has boxer experience and who will continue to get him familiar with the outside world. This boy LOVES basketballs and soccer balls. He has lived with a small dog but he is not good with cats.

We need to find Bentley a foster home since all of our foster homes are full. Please help Bentley start his new life.
