Harpo is a Name
a Boxer dog!
2/24/05 - - Update from Foster Home: "Harpo is doing great! He and Mika get along and play well together. On a few occasions Mika growled and showed her teeth to Harpo and Harpo quickly turned and calmed. They are definitely becoming friends. He seems very curious about Cody (my cat). He stares at Cody but Cody will not get close to Harpo, so I am not sure at this point exactly what Harpo will do when given an opportunity to interact up close with him. I am trying to let things happen at their own pace and of course keeping a watchful eye to be sure all is well and remains peaceful. To be honest, I have not been crating him because I have been so busy and he just hates it so much, but I will try to start working on that based on rescue's recommendations this week. Harpo knows sit but won't stay when there is any activity around him. He comes when called. He has had 2 accidents in the house (the beginning of the week) but I think I am reading his signs better now. He tends to try to climb into your lap and remains persistent at doing so when he wants to go out. Harpo sleeps on my bed every night. When I am on the couch watching TV he sits next to me. He likes to be close and follows me around the house. When I have to sit at my desk in my office to work for long periods of time during the day, he will come into the office with me, then he eventually makes his way out to the couch in the living room and he will occasionally come back into the office to check on me. When left in the house alone he will jump up and investigate what is on the counters (he broke one dog bowl which I had not moved far enough in) and he knocked over a candle on an end table in the living room, but for the most part he seems to be fine. He has only been left alone in the house (with Mika and Cody) for short periods of time at this point. Harpo will do best with someone who will be able to spend a lot of time with him. He enjoys chasing a ball and playing with toys and is just a very sweet and loving dog."
2/20/05 - Harpo came to us from a shelter after being picked up as a stray. He was found roaming down the highway with no tags and a choke collar. Luckily, the choke collar did not snag onto something which could have strangled him. He has since gone to the vet for a check up, vaccinations and deworming. The doctor could not say enough about Harpo's sweet demeanor. His neuter appointment has been delayed until he has gained sufficient weight to undergo surgery. Although he is terribly thin, he is eating well and should be looking and feeling better soon. Harpo is currently being fostered with a 3 year old lab mix and a cat. Everyone seems to be getting along well. He snuggles on the couch during the day with his foster sister and enjoys sleeping on the bed at night...a boxer's favorite place to sleep. Harpo walks nicely on a leash, and follows you around when inside the house. The foster home is slowly trying to acclimate him to a crate, and it will take lots of patience and time before Harpo is comfortable when confined.
