LADDY THE SUPER SENIOR

A volunteer from another breed rescue, out of our area, contacted us to see if we could bring a senior dog into our program.  Shanna saw Laddy in her local shelter and knew he needed help.  He was a scared brindle boy who was dropped off by his owner of eight years.  Laddy’s family was moving … but not with him.

We were informed that the shelter had put him on their list of dogs to be killed.  He was scheduled to die within the week.  We were also told that the shelter would not neuter him because he was cryptorchid (one of his testicles was not descended).  We immediately made arrangements to bring him into NBR’s foster care program and scheduled his initial examination and neuter surgery (Thank you Shanna for making sure Laddy was saved).

Due to Laddy’s age and undecided testicle, we paid for an extensive senior profile blood work prior to surgery.  We were concerned that Laddy’s retained testicle might have become malignant or that he may have been heartworm positive.  The odds of getting cancer increases the longer the testicle remains inside the body.  Also, since he was kept outside for most of his life, the possibility of heartworm was high.

Thankfully there was no cancer present and most of his blood work was good.  The only minor concern was that his thyroid level was low.  The doctor felt his thyroid level may improve after he recovers so Laddy will be returning for a follow up blood test to see if he will need to be placed on medication.  He also tested positive for hookworms and was dewormed.

This is Laddy’s foster mom’s report after he was first brought home from the shelter:

“I'll be giving Laddy a bath today and bringing him to the Vet tomorrow.  He will be having his blood work done, heartworm test, fecal test, neuter surgery and nails clipped.  I will make sure they don't use ACE on him. (NOTE: Acepromazine is a sedative that should not be given to a boxer)

So far Laddy has been well behaved, considering all he's been through.  He rode well in the car on the trip home.  He is eating and drinking OK so far.  Laddy was not used to eating two meals a day, so he's been picking at his breakfast today.  According to the paperwork, Laddy was fed only once a day; 2 cups of dry food between 4-5PM.  He was also left outside for 16 hours a day, and if in the home he was crated.  The intake form from the shelter also states he lived with a cat.

Laddy has been good on the leash and listens well.  He knows his sit, stay and lay down commands.  He's been pretty mellow so far.  My boxer female, 7 years old, has gotten along well with him and he seems to be OK with her.  I'm taking things slowly.  Laddy has not had any accidents in my home but he has limited "free" time around the house for now.

I really feel for him.  It doesn't seem like he's had a lot of interaction with being petted and loved on.  Laddy hasn't given me any boxer kisses yet, but he does wag his tail when being spoken to, when taken outside, when taken on walks and when he receives attention.  I'll keep you posted.

I'm so happy we were able to save this guy’s life.  He seems like he's got a lot love to give even though he obviously hasn't been given much before coming into rescue.”
