1/30/09: Adopted!
Update 12/21/08:
READY AND RARING TO GO
Spanky returned to Tuft’s for his final radiographs and received a “thumbs up” from his doctor. “Everything looks great…!”
He did have a small growth which was determined by cytology to be a histiocytoma. This is a benign tumor that usually disappears on its own. The growth is clearing up nicely and is almost gone.
Spanky is an active boy who loves to play with his doggie siblings or his foster mom and dad, he's not picky! He is sometimes a bit shy with strangers, but warms up quickly and becomes your new best friend.
He loves to cuddle; it doesn't matter if it's a person or a dog. His foster sister, a lab named Lillie, seems to be his preferred pillow. After a long recovery, Spanky has become a normal fun loving puppy with no signs of slowing down.
Sweet little Spanky is finally ready and is raring to go to his new home.
Update - 10/17/08
Direct from Spanky's foster mom and dad... "Spanky had his staples removed a little over a week ago. He was such a trooper, he never whines and is always happy to meet new people or dogs. Actually, he's almost always happy. He wags so much his body wiggles, and he's a kisser. Affectionate is one way to describe the Spanky-Doodle.
Spanky has been gradually gaining strength back after his convalescence, and now wants to play with his foster brothers and sister, about all the time. He likes to run and he has quite a bit of energy. He's discovered toys and loves to play tug of war or just shake a nylabone and growl at it.
After he's done playing, he usually flops down for a nice nap, which usually include snuggling with one of the other dogs or one of his foster humans. He's been very good about potty training and he's working on leash training and obedience. He already knows sit and come, and is always a good boy! Soon he will be ready to find a forever home. He whispered in my ear that he'd love to have a brother or sister to play with!"
A BROKEN LEG AND A BROKEN FAMILY
Sadly, we hear of many stories such as Spanky's sad tale. A family purchases a sweet puppy and does not take into account the cost of the dog¢s routine or emergency care. The result is a puppy at risk of dying, uprooted from their family, and a family brought to tears over the loss of their dog.
Sweet 4 month old Spanky had his back leg slammed in a door which resulted in a double fracture. When he was taken to a veterinarian the estimated cost to repair his leg was more than his family could afford. The family had no choice but to surrender him to our rescue program.
We paid for Spanky's initial vet bill and transferred him to TUFTS through their emergency department. Spanky's tibia and femur bones were both fractured and he was readied for surgery the next day.
The orthopedic surgeon needed to place a rod in the center of Spanky's bone and secured the severed pieces with a metal plate and screws. The operation was without incident and Spanky recovered quickly enough to go home the next day. His activity will need to be restricted for 8 weeks until he is healed.
