03/14/09:  SADIE IS CLOSE TO PERFECT

We are so happy that Sadie has come into our rescue program.  She is such a sweetheart, and the thought of what her fate would have been at the shelter is chilling.  Below is the latest report from Sadie's foster mom:

"Sadie is terrific!!!  She has been sleeping in her....HER!!! chair all night....She isn’t too comfortable sleeping with us as we have a very high bed and I think it is a very long way down for her.  We are looking into getting some doggie steps so she will feel more secure.

There have been NO accidents….for all intents and purposes she appears to be fully house trained and does well on the leash.  In fact, the minute you pick up the leash she is ready and raring to GO...she loves to take walks.  She actually prances along at a pretty good clip.  She is just adorable!!!!!!

We took quite a few walks at first because we were not sure how things would go through the night and wanted to make sure that Sadie had every opportunity to do her business.  We worried for naught as she has sailed through each night without any apparent anxieties and seems to be adjusting well to the new sights and sounds of our household.

She perks right up whenever the parrot calls for the cat....and runs to go check him out.  Once she discovers that it is just the parrot she turns around, trots back to her chair and jumps onto it and curls up for another short cat...oooops!!! we mean DOG... nap.

Sadie went to the vet this week.  She wowed them in the Vet's office with that winning personality of hers.  She weighed in at a little over 20 pounds.  My vet says that she would place her age between 2-4 years and thinks that she actually may be younger than the three years the shelter had guestimated.

She is physically healthy, teeth in good shape but, she could use a little BONE work ( chewing that is! ).  She is definitely spayed, ears nice and healthy etc.  Stool specimen was sent out.  Lyme and Heartworm testing done.....negative for heartworm but, ironically, tested slightly positive for Lymes'.

Sadie does have kennel cough and the same antibiotic would be used for both Lymes' and kennel cough ( Doxycycline ), a two week treatment for kennel cough and since she is testing slightly positive ( she has been exposed, but not full blown yet ) the vet has added another week to cover the Lymes'.

Since Sadie is a young dog, the vet wanted to get on top of it before things worsened and truly affected Sadie’s' health.  We talked about the vaccines etc. while sick with kennel cough and the vet advised the rabies and distemper and to hold off on any others for now.  We go back in another 3 weeks for follow up.  If all is well, then we will finish up with the necessary vaccines etc.

Alas, because Sadie is not feeling completely up to par with the "cough" she will not be traveling with us this weekend to visit our daughter.  My youngest will be staying with her and Sadie will be staying home until she is feeling better.  For a little dog she moves right along at a really good clip, a regular little trotter!  She absolutely loves to go for walks; I can't wait for mud season to end so that we can get out on the open road so to speak.

Sadie did fine today at home while I went to work.  My daughter, who was in and out with all of her errands, took her out for a walk a few times and she spent time with her.  But…..She said overall Sadie was very happy to be lying on the couch ( it was where she found her napping most of the day ) and was very happy to go back to lying on the couch once she had finished with her business outdoors.

Sadie has settled in and has made herself at home.....thanks so much for letting us foster this little gem.”

AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT...SADIE IS SAFE

Sadie is a three year old sheltie-corgi mix who landed in our rescue program by fate.  On a long transport to pick up Ismir, two of our volunteers passed a small high kill shelter and decided to stop.  When they walked into the building they found out there were no boxers in the shelter, but pressed against the front of a wire kennel was a sad little dog named Sadie.

Sadie did not bark or whine; she just looked up at them with the most incredible expressive eyes they had ever seen.  When they knelt to talk to her, she moved but she did not stand…they were concerned at first that something might be wrong with her hind end.  When they walked a few steps away from her she whimpered to get their attention and they knew they could not leave her there.

We learned that Sadie was surrendered to the shelter by a woman who only had her for two weeks after getting her from a friend.  She dropped off Sadie along with Sadie’s eight month old daughter.  The puppy was quickly adopted, however, they left Sadie behind.

When our volunteers inquired about Sadie, the shelter staff was elated that our rescue was interested. They said to go ahead and take her because they kill dogs every day, and Sadie had already been there for over a week.

As soon as they left the shelter, they took Sadie for a much needed 'spa' treatment.  Although it was late in the day, and there were no available appointments, the groomers at Petco decided they would fit her in when they saw her.  Poor Sadie was very worried at first when she was handed over to them.  She was most likely afraid that she was being discarded once again.

While Sadie was being groomed, NBR made purchases to replace her worn dirty collar with a cute harness and matching leash.  After an hour and a half, the groomer came out with Sadie all nice and clean holding her like a newborn baby.  Sadie looked so content and ever so pretty.  Our volunteers happily carried her out the door to take Sadie to her next new adventure.

Sadie rode great in the car, chose to curl up on our volunteer’s lap, and quickly fell asleep.  She was a joy to have in the car, and was a wonderful trip companion.  They proceeded on their journey to pick up Ismir and, after a long trip, Sadie was taken to meet her new foster mom and dad.

This is the fist report from Sadie’s foster mom:

“Well, we have been home now for a little over four hours with Sadie.  The first hour was a slow process.  Sadie finally went to the bathroom, ate a little supper and then a little more as she discovered that she was very hungry!!!

I had to pick her up and stroke and cuddle with her for a while as she was a little shy once in the house.  Sadie finally came around and actually started playing with her toy…we are going to the pet store tomorrow and see what else we can find to play with!!!!

She really likes to have her belly rubbed.  I took a couple of pictures of her in HER chair.  For some reason, she decided that she likes my husband’s chair and as fast as she is out of it she jumps right back up and curls up for a snooze.  She has taken a few naps over the past few hours as she seems to be a little tired with all that traveling.

Sadie looks at our cat BOO with longing in her eyes as though she would dearly love to make friends with him.  BOO is tolerating her presence and does not seem to be threatened by her so far....eventually they will both come to some kind of understanding.

My daughter also came by this evening and was surprised (we didn't have time to tell her that we had picked up our foster) and so thrilled to see another dog in the house.  Sadie and Shaina bonded instantly and my daughter laughed and said...."I think that Sadie is going to be a little bit of a princess".  Whatever she is she is awfully cute and appears to be moving right into her foster home.

How fortunate for Sadie that you decided to stop and check out that shelter on your way to rescue the other dog. ”
