08/17/09: An
update on Henrietta, a
courageous and loving friend
"On
July 24, Henrietta arrived
safely in New Hampshire
after a lengthy transport
from South
Carolina. When
we arrived at the designated
pick up point (PETCO),
this petite frail little
girl made her first
appearance. At first
glance, Henrietta showed
signs of enduring quite a
lot of adversity. It
was hard to fathom that she
had endured this long
arduous trip given her
physical condition.
However, she showed a
striking will to survive.
I was amazed at her
resilience.
Henrietta
was covered with scars, had
contusions on her small
frame, was extremely
emaciated and had broken
teeth. Despite her
very sickly condition and
appearance, this little
trooper attracted a crowd
like a rock star.
Employees and shoppers were
drawn to her with
affectionate curiosity.
It seemed that everyone knew
that with love and much
care, she would recover and
give back three fold the love
and affection given
to her. In many eyes
that afternoon, you could
see concern and a
questioning as to how anyone
could be so neglectful and
irresponsible to such a
sweet little girl. We quite
appreciated how generous and
attentive the PETCO staff
were in sharing in the
comforting of Henrietta and
feeding her cookies at the
pickup. During this
time, Henrietta showed
intent curiosity in the
other visitors and occupants
in PETCO. Clearly, she
enjoyed and appreciated the
attention given to her.
When
Henrietta arrived at her
foster home, she met her new
buddy, Dora, a female boxer.
This additional transition
went very smoothly and they
enjoyed a quiet walk
together. Henrietta
has adjusted well in her
foster family and has
demonstrated a great deal of
courage by trusting and
allowing us to care for her.
She has responded well to
preliminary treatments for
intestinal parasites, and a urinary
tract infection.
She is responding quite well
to frequent meals. She
has already gained
approximately eight pounds
and her coat is looking much
better. With this
consistent and improved
diet, Henrietta is showing
us her spunky side, and can
even be a little
mischievous. She likes
her foster mommy’s
slippers. Henrietta is
a precious little love.
She has been super well
behaved with everyone and
every other pet pal that she
has met! She is
settling in very well and
appears to be at ease, and
loves her new slumber bed!
Life is good now for
Henrietta and it’s all
about the love, the food and
a good long snooze with her
new friend, Dora.
Lastly, Henrietta is
heartworm positive.
She urgently needs to start
the heartworm treatment
soon. The veterinarian
advised us to “fatten her
up” so that she can endure
the treatment. Hence,
she courageously eats all of
her meals…what an appetite
this little girl has
(smile). With all
these efforts, she is well
on her way to being a
wonderful addition to any
loving home."

HENRIETTA IS HEARTWORM
POSITIVE….AND HAS, WITHOUT
QUESTION, LIVED A VERY HARD
LIFE
We once
again received a call from
another rescue organization
asking if we could take an
adult boxer named Henrietta
into our rescue program.
Henrietta needed medical
attention immediately.
She had tested positive for
heartworm and was in danger
of being killed at a
shelter.
Henrietta
was picked up as a stray and
the shelter's vet estimated
her age at 2 years. We
think she may be older but
it is hard to say for
certain. To look at
Henrietta it is extremely
apparent that she has had a
very hard life; it just
breaks your heart. She
has diarrhea and is
painfully skinny; emaciated
does not seem like a strong
enough term for her poor
physical condition.
She clearly has had several
litters of puppies and has
large calluses on areas of
her body from laying on hard
surfaces.
Once the
shelter received our
commitment to take Henrietta
into our rescue program, she
was treated for a serious
upper respiratory infection.
We had to wait two weeks
before she could be
transported to our foster
home because she needed a
health certificate to cross
over state lines.
Henrietta
was kenneled at the shelter
with another boxer, which
the other rescue took, and
both dogs rode together on
the transport. We were
told they had bonded through
this whole ordeal…so we
know, Henrietta would do
well with another dog.
Everyone
that Henrietta has come in
contact with has expressed
complete adoration for this
sweet soul. She is now
safely in her foster mom’s
care and getting much needed
TLC. We are
scheduling an appointment
for her to receive a
complete physical by one of
our veterinarians, and we
are hoping they can give us
a better idea of her age.
She will be receiving
treatment for her heartworm
as soon as the doctor says
she is strong enough.
