The Latest from Stewie’s Foster Mom

“Stewie is doing great. He has been in our home for 7 weeks and he is absolutely wonderful! Stewie is full of boxer love and wiggles and has brought so much joy and happiness into our home. Stewie has a 10 year old foster fur brother, Sugar Ray, who he just adores. They love to play tug, go for long walks, play ball or curl up on the couch for a good nap.

Stewie has settled in nicely, although there were a few bumps in the road in the beginning. We were fortunate to have a great support system from NBR. Jane’s constant guidance and patience was priceless. We listened to her direction, made sure we were consistent, and used common sense. We did it together.  I cannot stress enough the importance of not giving up on these wonderful dogs whether you are fostering or adopting. You cannot expect any dog to walk into your home and feel at home. That is not realistic. They are frightened, unsure, worried and stressed out. Having direction and constant contact from Jane was the answer and we are thrilled that we listened to her.

We now know we could never give him up anymore than give up on him. Stewie has made a wonderful addition to our family and we love him dearly. Carlos, Justin, Sugar Ray and I are so grateful to Northeastern Boxer Rescue for giving us the opportunity to foster Stewie. We have decided to make him a permanent member of our family.

Stewie has made himself right at home.”

08/23/09: THIS YOUNG BOY FOUND HIMSELF ALONE AND AFRAID

Stewie was a stray who found himself in the care of animal control.  When we received the call asking for our help, we were told Stewie was very timid and would not even come out of his kennel when they were cleaning his run.  Shy dogs seem to blossom with our gentle approach and we did not hesitate to agree to take him into our rescue program.

When our volunteers arrived at the shelter Stewie did not hesitate to come to them for a treat and walked freely out of his kennel and into a new life.  He warmed up to them immediately and never looked back.

He has been checked by our vet who determined he was about a year old.  He was treated for a slight upper respiratory infection as well as an urinary tract infection.  His heart and lungs sounded good and he appears to be in good health.  Luckily he was also heart worm negative

Below is the first report from Stewie’s foster mom:

“Stewie is a gorgeous small brindle and white neutered male that came to us from a local shelter.  He is doing well and is the happiest little boy.  He has adjusted to our home really well after just five days here.

Stewie has been wonderful with everyone he has met.  He has claimed me as his mom; I can't go anywhere without him, and he thinks he is a lap dog.  He used the doggy door right away but after a few times in/out the plastic hit him in the bum and he became petrified of the door, so we removed the plastic doors and replaced them with screen and he now uses the doggy door like a pro.

He loves to go for walks and he is not afraid of people or dogs.  He walks well on a leash and is fine in the house.  However, Stewie is having some urine incontinence issues, no doubt due to a urinary tract infection which we are treating.  He also has some submissive urinating that we are working on as well.

He is energetic so another dog that will play with him would be ideal.  Stewie really enjoys and does well with a fenced in yard that he can access during the day on his own whenever he wants.  There is nothing but great things to say about this boy.”
