02/28/11: No Longer Accepting Applications for Mistletoe and Noel

02/27/11: Update from their foster mom...

"The Christmas girls are positively thriving-- they are happy, healthy, playful puppies, each with her own special personality . . . Mistletoe is the most polite of the girls, a real little flower. She waits when we come in the door, doesn't jump and is extremely gentle with kids. We often find ourselves calling Holly "Hollymonster" because she is such a big girl (20 pounds!) and so full of love. She plays hard (they all do-- they're boxers, after all!) but she is also the first to climb in a lap when it's time to settle down, and loves being held like a baby. She has gained a lot of confidence in the last couple of weeks but still wants to be a teddy bear. Noel is the most self-assured of the girls and a great little kisser. :) Noel loves to climb and can often be found perched on the couch cushions next to our shoulders. All three girls are coming along nicely with their potty training, and are steadily gaining weight. In the last week, Holly has put on five pounds, Mistletoe and Noel have added three!

The girls are enjoying their time as a trio, alternating between playing and cuddling, but are also very people-oriented-- all three of these girls would be happy with other dogs, but would also thrive as the center of attention. Holly and Noel in particular will have a lot of energy as they grow and will need good outlets. Noel is confident enough to keep up with big dogs who can run her around a backyard. Mistletoe is a true family dog, and would thrive in a family with gentle children who appreciate her sensitive nature. Holly loves, loves, loves her people and would do best in a family where she doesn't have to be away from her people all day long-- she is also a bit jealous at times (in the sweetest way possible), and will climb on top on her sisters if one of them is in a lap, making room for herself. All three girls are highly adaptable, but Holly in particular would love to be at her person's side for much of the day and would love to be the center of her person's universe. She will also thrive at a doggie day care or at the dog park, where she could really mix it up with the other doggies-- she's not at all shy, just very loyal. Holly's ideal owner would work from home (or part time) and would love to take her running or find other ways for her to exercise, besides just letting her out in the the yard. She's a bright and silly girl and will benefit from a lot of interaction with her people.

The Christmas Girls are truly special dogs who will make three lucky families very, very happy! They have wonderful personalities and souls. "

02/11/11: A Testament To Good Medical Care and Heartfelt Nurturing

What a difference!

A lot has happened with Noel, Holly, and Mistletoe since our last long overdue update. As you can see by their new photos they are all filling out nicely and obviously thriving (not to mention they are all incredibly adorable and cute as a button =).

All three of their skulls have now completely closed and the concern that they would be hydrocephalic is no longer an issue. In our last report, Holly and Noel were doing well but Mistletoe was lagging behind and struggling with some orthopedic concerns. She was receiving customized physical therapy and she is now bigger and stronger than both of her sisters! Mistletoe's tenacity has surprised us and all of our worries about her have been resolved.

The puppies will be 8 weeks old on Thursday but we will be keeping them together a little while longer since they had such a grueling start to their life. They were already given two inoculations since they had no antibodies from their mother's milk to protect them and they will be getting more shots this week. They have also been dewormed again. Their medical routine has been established and followed, and all reports have been favorable.

These three wonderful puppies have stolen all of our hearts, and it has been such a joy to watch them blossom. They are all trusting little souls each with their own endearing personality.

Noel is the brindle with the larger blaze on her face. She seems to be the most independent and demanding. She likes to steal the show!

Holly is the other pretty brindle girl. She is the shy one of the three and likes to run back to her foster mom for reassurance. She is the homebody!

Mistletoe is the precious fawn. She seems to handle everything in stride and goes with the flow. She is the diplomat!

All and in all, they have come a long long way thanks to the wonderful care of Doctor Jacqueline and her team. Medicine is key but you need to open the door first with love and compassion.

The dramatic turnaround of Noel, Mistletoe and Holly, is a testament that good medical care coupled with heartfelt nurturing can indeed perform miracles.

01/05/11: Our Little Christmas Miracles

We are happy to report that all three pups are still alive and doing well.  Holly and Noel appear to be thriving.  However, Mistletoe (the tiny fawn pup) is lagging a bit behind.

Mistletoe developed a swelling on her front and rear leg on the right side of her body.  Radiographs ruled out an injury. The doctor put her on antibiotics and she is slowly improving.

All three pups were also seen by a Neurologist.  Puppy skulls should close within 25 days… this is not the case with these sisters.  Our main concern was if they could be hydrocephalic (water on the brain).  Thankfully this is not a concern at this time.

Since the pups did not receive the first colostrum milk from their mother, which protects them from disease, they were given a small amount of blood plasma from a recently inoculated dog.....a boxer of course ;-).

They have started to eat a gruel two times a day along with their bottles of milk that they are receiving every four to six hours.  They all have hearty appetites and are starting to plump up…a very positive sign.

Noel, Holly and Mistletoe will be four weeks old on Friday and are scheduled to receive their first inoculations at six weeks old.  So far so good.

We will need a foster home for these three pups before January 21st when they will, hopefully, no longer need such intensive care.

12/23/10: Hoping For a Christmas Miracle

We received a call from a family asking for help. They intentionally bred their boxer hoping to sell her pups. They explained the mom had a cesarean section after being in labor for THREE days. She had a litter of eight puppies. Within days, five had died and the three others were fighting for their life. They did their best to try and keep the pups alive but one by one the pups were failing. Thinking they could breed their dog without complications and consequences soon became a myth. They realized that they were in over their heads.

We contacted our favorite veterinarian who has taken in many sick puppies from NBR in the past…we knew she was their best bet. We immediately made arrangements to have the three remaining pups brought to the hospital. Had they not received this intensive medical care when they did they would now be dead. All three puppies were extremely dehydrated and emaciated. They were put on IV fluids and tube fed the proper nutrition. They were also placed in incubators.

The doctor discovered that the fawn pup's tail was caked with feces. Her tail had adhered to her rectum and caused a bloody infection. It literally closed her anus and the bone from her recently docked tail was jutting out of the skin.

So far, the report from the vet is guardedly encouraging. They are not out of the woods by any means but we are hoping these three tiny girls will be our Christmas miracles.

Below is the first report from our volunteers who transported the pups and drove them to the hospital:

"We picked up the "Three Wise Girls" Noel, Mistletoe and Holly this morning and headed back on our journey to the hospital.
All three girls were/are very dry and extremely emaciated.  We tried
not to handle them too much on the way back so as not to cause any potential damage to muscle or bones.
We were able to get the puppies to evacuate on the ride home and we made sure every 30 minutes that they were still breathing.

Preliminary reports after the puppies arrived at the hospital are that the puppies are in bad shape and may have to be admitted to the emergency care facility. The doctor is with them now and will advise on a course of action."

12/22/10:  Information on
the little girls posting soon.

These three sisters are fighting for their lives, five of their siblings already died before they arrived to us. Please keep them in your hearts and prayers. We will post their full story as soon as we know more, right now our concern is with them. Mistletoe, Holly & Noel are in very rough shape and need your support and prayers.
