06/24/11: WILSON IS ADOPTED !!!!!!!!!!!!! Lucky Boy!

06/01/11: Update from Wilson's Foster Mom

"Wilson and I have just returned from doing one of his favorite things...going for a car ride. He loves watching the world go by and waits patiently in the passenger seat while I run errands. Soon it will be too hot to bring him along on errands but I'll still take him out for a short drive every now and then.

My husband was away when I first brought Wilson home but the first meeting went well and he now follows him everywhere. My daughter just arrived home from college yesterday and told me this morning that she is already in love with him (I think Wilson feels the same way). He gets very excited when someone new comes into the house and must greet them with his paws on their chest but he settles down fairly quickly. As far as meeting people in the neighborhood, he goes right up to them but will sometimes bark after jumping up on them. I'm still taking introductions very slowly.

He has met a few dogs on our street, but I am still not comfortable with him meeting some of the others since I am not sure of how he will react.

I had been leaving Wilson free in the house while I went out and he was doing well until the other day when he found a small bag of chocolate eggs in the dining room. The bags of dog biscuits on the kitchen counter didn't tempt him but I guess the smell of chocolate was more than he could resist. (He is a dog after my own heart)! I did check with the vet to make sure that he hadn't eaten enough to cause any problems. So for now, I have been crating him when I go out. I will go through the house and put anything that I think he might get into away, and then try letting him free again.

Meal time is another of Wilson's favorite times of day. He gets excited and talks to me, but sits patiently, while I get his food ready. He hasn't shown any signs of aggression while eating.

I have been trying to give Wilson lots of exercise by taking him on long walks but he really needs to run. He runs around in the basement but that isn't enough. I did try letting him off leash in the yard and he ran around the house twice and came back to me. The next time I tried it he ran over to the neighbor's yard but he did come back when I called. I need to find a large enclosed space that he can run in until he can be trained on the invisible fence.

Wilson still is anxious with quick movements and loud sounds but I have discovered he likes music and dancing. His tail is wagging more each day but we still aren't to the whole rear end wiggle yet."

05/03/11: Wilson Was Abandoned By His Family Then Labeled Unfairly

Wilson was slated to be killed at a shelter. He failed his “food screening” test because “his body froze” when they tried to remove his bowl so it was determined that he was not adoptable. A Vet tech at the shelter however thought he was labeled unfairly…she could feed him from her hand and he took the food very gently. She said he was very sweet and asked if we could take him into our program…we agreed.

Wilson was found roaming the streets in a "not so nice" neighborhood. He was scanned successfully for a microchip which showed he had been adopted two years earlier from the same shelter. His family was notified in a variety of ways including a certified letter and a visit to their home. They did not respond and, therefore, Wilson became a ward of the shelter.

We picked up Wilson at the shelter and transported him to our vet to be examined. Three “pea size” lumps were felt on his body and the vet aspirated them to look for abnormal cells; she felt that they were not a concern.

Arrangements were made to have one of our foster homes pick up Wilson from the vet’s office.

UPDATE FROM WILSON’S FOSTER MOM:

"Wilson was a great traveling companion on our 5 hour trip from Maryland to Connecticut. He sat in the back seat looking out the window or laid down and rested in between our 3 breaks. Once we arrived home, he was very excited to explore inside and out.

Wilson is becoming more and more comfortable with his new surroundings each day. He is a polite, energetic boy who plays hard but also enjoys cuddle time on the couch. He knows sit, shake, down, come, and drop it. I'm not sure about stay yet since he still needs to follow me everywhere. We have taken long walks around the neighborhood and he does pretty well with the help of the easy walk harness.

Although Wilson wanted to sleep in bed with me, he has settled for sleeping in his dog bed. He is an early riser (unlike his foster mom) but after a quick trip outside he is happy to snooze a little longer.

I am taking it slowly with Wilson despite our fast connection. I give him plenty of space when eating and approach him slowly. He startles easily with loud noises and last night during the thunderstorm he needed to be reassured several times.

I'm looking forward to learning more about Wilson each day."
