12/27/11: Zoey is ADOPTED
!!!!!
11/18/11: What A Difference
Care Makes
Zoey entered our Rescue
program 9 weeks ago and she
is finally healed thanks to
the excellent medical care
she has received from her
vet and the meticulous daily
care given by her foster
parents. Zoey had numerous
visits with the doctor to
check her progress, receive
various inoculations, and to
take necessary skin
scrapings. She is now
healthy enough to spay and
is scheduled for surgery
later this week. She will be
ready to be adopted as soon
as she recovers from her
operation. More details from
her foster mom are below:
“I am attaching
pictures of Zoey that were
taken about a month ago
which still show some minor
hair loss. Her coat is
completely grown in now and
she looks wonderful.
Zoey's last
vet check was great. She
gained a total of 9 pounds
since we got her and weighs
just a hair under 50lbs.
There were no mites present
in the last two skin
scrapings. All of the vet
staff was amazed how good
she looks; some even did not
recognize her. When they
were told who she was they
were floored. She is not
currently taking any
medication and is set to get
spayed on Thursday November
17th.
On the home front
she is doing really
fantastic! Zoey is now
completely housebroken, is
crate trained, and does not
chew on things that are not
dog approved. She loves to
play with stuffed toys; at
any given time we have 20
toys scattered about. If I
try to clean them up she
follows me to the toy basket
and starts taking them out
again. I have to let her
since I feel like she is
making up for lost time.
We are still working
on the listening but I think
Zoey is too distracted by my
dogs to worry about that.
She is a ball of energy!!
She is still very interested
in the cat; she does not
attempt to hurt but likes to
chase. My cat does not seem
to mind but other cats could
be very upset by her
behavior. She does not bark
much at all which might be
what she was trained to do
when she lived in an
apartment.
Zoey loves
to cuddle and go for car
rides. She needs some
training but what one year
old boxer doesn’t. She is a
wonderful dog who really
deserves her forever home!!
Hopefully soon before I give
in and want to keep her.”
09/23/11: Zoey Has
Persevered Through
Severe Neglect
We received a call
from a veterinarian
regarding a 10 month old
boxer who they had
treated months earlier
for démodéctic mange.
Poor little Zoey was
never brought in for the
recommended follow-up
visits and apparently
she was not even getting
the Ivermection
medication as
prescribed.
Zoey
was recently brought
back to the vet because
of a terrible laceration
to her foot caused by
walking on city pavement
with sensitive paws. The
mange had spread
throughout her skin and
her paws became
extremely irritated. She
was now also mostly
bald. Surgery to repair
the foot injury was
performed the next day.
Zoey’s family
decided that having to
care for her was
overwhelming and asked
the vet hospital if they
would take her. They
agreed and had her
surrendered to NBR.We
contacted an NBR foster
parent who is familiar
with treating skin
conditions. She was
available and Zoey’s new
foster mom made the trip
to pick her up and bring
her home.
Zoey
was slowly introduced to
the two resident boxers
and their cat. She is
melding in with no major
issues and doing well
with all. Zoey also came
with a crate that she
was used to sleeping in
but she set the rules
and decided her foster
parent’s bed was more
comfortable. She made
herself at home by
sleeping across her
foster mom the first
night. Not a peep was
heard all night. Zoey is
a sweetheart, but she
needs some basic
training to refine her
manners.
Here is
Zoey’s first update (we
hope to post some new
pics soon =)
“Zoey got her stitches
removed yesterday which
went very smoothly.
Everyone at the vet’s
office was amazed by how
good she looked in just
a week’s time. She is
starting to get her hair
back; looks like she has
a five o’clock shadow.
We have been working on
her manners which she
badly needs. She has sit
and lay down pat; just
needs to learn her
boundaries.
She
has had a couple of
accidents in the house
but they were mostly our
fault for not noticing
her signals. We are
keeping Zoey in a crate
when we are gone. She is
doing well, however, I
am home during the day
so the amount of time
she is confined is
minimal. I think she
spent a lot of time in
her crate before coming
into Rescue.
Zoey does not
bark and is not sure
what is going on when
our dogs bark. She has
more energy than any
puppy I have ever seen,
probably because she is
starving for attention.
Her previous situation
included living with a
single mom in a one
bedroom apartment with
four children.
I
do not think she had
ever seen a cat before
but is doing great with
our cat. Only problem is
that she wants to play
with the cat and he does
not think much of that.
She is great with our
dogs and she is very
gentle around people. I
will try and send some
new pictures soon.”
