07/15/03 - Django

Django is a one and a half year old brindle male that due to personal reasons his owner has to give him up. He is house trained, great with other dogs and is very obedient and knows many commands.  He would do best in a home with another dog to play with. This is what his owner writes about his Django:

DJANGO (prounounced JANG-O)
He was born on September 6, 2001, currently weighs 72 lbs, has a brindle coat, natural ears and has been neutered.

He has had a great life so far, filled with people who loved him and were able to spend a lot of time with him. For this reason he has not spent alot of time alone. Recently my support system, as well as his has fallen away from us. He has adjusted better than I, and seems happier and more obedient than ever. It has been our routine since he arrived to make a daily excursion to the local dog park. He spends at least an hour there and is very social. He has shown no signs of aggression with any other dogs, and has played happily with both small dogs and large. While he likes to chase and retrieve balls, he doesn't like to give them back, rather taunts people and dogs alike to chase him. When dogs play roughly he usually circles them much as a referee and will not get involved. He enjoys the water, but will only immerse himself as far as his stomach and seems a bit uncomfortable swimming.

He has had one experience visiting a house with cats and showed no aggression towards them, although he was curious. At that same visit he also encountered a three year old girl and when left in a fenced in back yard with her and a greyhound, they all seemed to play beautifully. Recently he has been in doggie daycare and whether a full day or half, he seemed to adjust just fine, and was commended by the owners as a great dog. He does spend some time in a crate there, but is not crate trained, this due to the fact that he grew up with a 8 year old black lab who I was hoping could show him the way to behave when I was away. Not too unexpectedly he has acted out on these occasions, but always by either getting into the garbage, or by chewing something personal to me, ie: address book, ski goggles etc. Yesterday I left him alone for 2 and a half hours at night. If I had not forgotten to remove the garbage can from the room, I don't think there would have been any problem at all. He only toppled the can to find some food, and did not dig through the can. When I arrived I found him sleeping quietly. He was house trained in 6 days, and has not had any accidents since then.

Django sleeps on a dog bed through the night but is allowed to come up on the bed and snuggle with me only after I am awake. He has been allowed to spend time on both the bed and on the couch, but sometimes just prefers the hardwood floor. His food (Eagle Pack) is left out for him all day and he eats when he is hungry, which varies. I have not seen him consume more than two bowls in one day.

He does bark at strangers and when there is knocking at the door, but calms quickly if the people show him love and attention. Since he is not on a leash at the park, we have not spent a lot of time walking on the leash, and he pulls a bit, but responds to commands when given sternly.
