08/28/03 -

I took Harley up along the Hudson River yesterday and we ran around in a few parks. Wow!  He LOVES to run.

Of course, I kept an open eye for other dog walkers, as Harley has an insatiable appetite to go after other dogs. He might be better behaved with other dogs off the leash, but I have never given him the chance. Here are some pictures of Harley resting in front of the Lyndhurst estate in Tarrytown. Great place to run a dog around and get tired.

Harley has made great advances with his weight. As you can see, he's in great shape. He is very strong. He's also getting better with walking near other dogs -- I just have to keep him on a short leash or we walk across the street to avoid any possible altercation. Small dogs seem to be the biggest problem, as he doesn't hesitate to jumping after them. Harley definitely should avoid any home with any small dogs or cats (or other small animals).

He is absolutely incredible with children. I have a little concern with babies and small toddlers. But Kids over 2 run up to him all the time and he just kisses them over and over.

08/19/03 - update: Harley needs a foster home ASAP

08/11/03 -  You can see more PICS of Harley at the Central Park Event that he participated in.

Harley is doing great at his foster home. He is never crated, can be left home alone all day, when his foster dad gets home from work, the house is the same way he left it.

Harley is great with people and older kids but not good with other dogs, we do not know about cats. He really need a home of his own with a fenced in yard. He walks OK on leash but will pull if he sees another dog. So an only dog home is what he is looking for, can it be your home?

It looks like Harley will fit in best in a home where he is the only critter...

07/21/03 - Harley.

Everyone that meets Harley loves him.

We don't know if that was his original name, but he responds to "Harley" and it describes his personality quite well. We really don't know anything about his past. His tag from the shelter said "stray." I really can't believe that anyone would give this guy up. He is so mellow and well behaved around people. He doesn't resist much when led into a crate, but he clearly prefers the freedom to roam the house. He's done very well so far -- left him alone for a one-hour period, then a two-hour period, and today he gets to try six hours -- we'll see.

In the two days that he's been with me, he hasn't attempted to destroy anything. Some boxers that I've fostered have had anxiety issues, especially after being in the shelter. Harley would like to go everywhere with me, but he's content just hanging in the apartment and guarding the home. He walks very well on a leash, that is, as long as it's just people around...

Harley's one behavioral concern: other dogs. I haven't determined if it's playful or not, but when another dog is around, he squats, stalks, and lunges.  We will get back to you when we know more about how he is with other dogs.

Harley was recently neutered, which may also help with his interaction with other dogs.

The vet at the shelter thinks Harley is 6. He's thin from life in the shelter, but he's still extremely strong. Harley has taken to a normal eating regimen very quickly (including his digestive process), and I'd expect him to fill out quickly. He doesn't devour his meals, leading me to believe that he's always had a normal feeding schedule.
