Good news – Pamela Dennison, Positive Motivation Behaviorist, has accepted Champ and me for training.  Pam is a respected and published behaviorist who specializes in dog fear and aggression and she has agreed to work with Champ.  Pam is very positive about Champ and her fear recovery – since Champ is so intelligent, people friendly and eager to please.  We will be traveling to Jersey until we overcome our fear.

Champ is doing much better now that we are using a SENSA-tion harness and working on behavior modification.  Still not good with kitties but much better with dogs on our walks.  Champ is also learning how to behave and play nice with others with her foster sisters and is loving naps on the couch  and long hikes in the woods  with my Dalmatian.  Champ is doing so well I cannot remember when she was new to the house.  In addition to the hikes and naps Champ is learning fetch and to play Frisbee (can this girl jump!!!!) and with Pam we might even find a way to learn agility because this pup loves to play and has more than enough energy.

Champ is still a Velcro Dog and loves to snuggle on your lap or on the bed (I know – shame shame, but her snoring is like a cat’s purr and so calming).  If not for my cats she would not have to be in her crate at night – but that is their time out and about.  Champ is an excellent dog with more love than I thought possible.  For those of you who want a hiking, play companion this is the girl for you.  Just remember you have to have a cat free home with a fenced yard and time to play.  Champ is doing better than anyone thought possible and is responding to love, kindness and treats.  Champ is recovering from the terrible cruelty she was forced to endure and still willing to trust.  This has been an excellent foster and an wonderful experience and I am thankful for the opportunity – so please consider Champ as your life companion.

 03/03/04 - Champagne

This is Champagne and her story is all too common.  She is about four years old and a boxer mix.  Champ used to be called Tramp but the name did not fit so we changed it to Champ, sounds similar but more indicative of her personality.  A woman purchased Champ for her daughter but when Champ proved too energetic for the house and having never received any training or care was banned to the outdoors; tied to a tree.  That was about three years ago.  Add to that, feed her when convenient, do not spay her or keep her up to date on shots and leave her to her own devices with nothing but an eight foot lead and an igloo.  Champ was never allowed in, not even the basement for more than three years.  Well, fortunately for Champ my partner fell in love with her when he first met her and when his mother rented from Champ’s family we were able to convince them to surrender her.  That was November 29th.   Champ is a foster living with us, my 12 year old Golden and 4 year old Dalmatian and my two cats (who are currently residing in the basement).

How to describe this little girl?  Well, she is a Velcro dog – no matter where I am she has to be with me or with the other human sharing our home.  Champ loves to crawl onto the bed or couch and snuggle as close as she can to be with you.  Champ loves her stuffed “dog catcher” and will play catch and is learning fetch.  If she can’t be in your lap she will be at your feet.

Champ and I have been working one on one with an animal behaviorist.  In addition I am training her, she is adjusting well, is very intelligent and eager to please.  Champ was never socialized and needs training and patience when interacting with other dogs.  Champ is very fearful of other dogs and will react accordingly.  Champ will need an experienced dog person.  Champ is learning to trust the leash but will need continued training, as she is afraid of other dogs when on lead and will probably never be a dog park dog.  She will walk well on the leash as long as we are attentive to other dogs.  Champ needs a home without cats and would be happiest as an only dog but will adjust to another dog.

Champ is crate trained, house trained and needs a fenced yard.  Champ shares her bones, toys and even her crate.  She is patient and loves people, hence the nickname Velcro Dog.  She is gentle, kind and full of love – never lets you out of her sight.  Champ was forced outdoors and left to the elements.  Her frostbitten ears are healed, she is learning to trust the lead and I am committed to her never having to live outdoors again.  So, if you have lots of love, lots of patience and love lots of wet sloppy kisses and the soft sound of a dog’s snore than Champ is waiting to meet you.  Champ is UTD on all shots and has been spayed.
