Lizzie is doing well.  She is so precious.  When we picked her up from the vet the techs that took care of her all came out to say good-bye to her and wish her a happy new life.  She touched them so that they shed tears of happiness.  She received lots of hugs and kisses from each of them and loved every moment of it!  She was perfect in the car for the ride home looking out the window in amazement of the world she has missed all her life.  When we got home we took her over to the grass and she obviously has never walked on grass before because she would sniff it then back away. When she finally touched the grass with her front paws she jumped off of it!  She is so very curious and determined!  After a few minutes she walked all the way onto the grass and looked up at me as if to say "wow this stuff is strange feeling on my paws and it feels better than wire".  The next adventure was to try steps to get inside!  That was interesting.  We put one foot in front of the other and she figured it out quickly.  We have not tried going down the steps yet.  She met her three other foster sisters and seemed to really like them.  She was more interested in looking around the house though.  This being her first time ever in a home, she just sniffed and looked everywhere.  Her first night in a home and she was perfect.  She slept in a crate with a nice fluffy blanket that she made a nest out of right away.    All the sounds are new to her so she listens carefully to everything happening around her.  When it was time to sleep she curled up and tucked her little head under her paw.  It is quiet here compared to the hellish puppy mill she was rescued from so she fell to sleep almost immediately.  This is day one of her new life and the rest will only get better when she finds her FOREVER home. Please consider making a donation to help pay for Lizzie's vet bills.  We need to say "YES" to the next boxer who needs us.  Saying "NO" is not an option when you have a little boxer face looking at you and is in need.  To all of you wonderful and generous people who have sent a donation we thank you so very much because we could not help Lizzie or any other boxer without YOU!

9/3/04 - Lizzie

We received a call from a Lancaster County Amish farmer who no longer had use for a 5 year old female boxer now named "Lizzie".  We immediately went to pick her up because the farmer said if we don't want her he will just put her to sleep.  We were on our way within hours of the call.  When we arrived (my niece 7, and brother) I realized it was the same farm we rescued Molly from almost a year ago.  At that time the farmer had 2 boxers, now there were 6  females having puppies without a break.  To make as much money as possible the farmer said he breeds them as soon as the female comes into heat after delivering puppies.  So, she is bred while nursing the litter she just had.

The conditions were appalling.  The boxers were kept in cages outside and raised their puppies out in the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter.  When we rescued Molly last year it was 12 degrees outside  (she sleeps in a Queen size bed now).   The dogs get protective when they have puppies and fight each other through the wire that divides their cages.  While we were there all six were growling and trying to fight each other!  The cages were so small the dogs can not move around much.

When we asked where the dog was that we were to pick up we were led to an old barn.  There in a dark, dirty and hot stall was Lizzie cowering in the corner.  She was pathetic looking.  Her nails were 3 inches long so she could barely walk.  She had an eye infection, her coat and eyes were so dull.  I went over to her and slipped a leash around her neck and gently coaxed her to come with me.  I silently said "come on girl, let's get out of here.  I have a new life waiting for you".  Almost as if she heard me she quietly slinked by my side to the car.  I helped her in because she was so weak.  She has obviously never had a bath because she smelled so bad we had to ride an hour and a half with all the windows down.

She was an angel in the car - she never made a sound only lifting her head as if to say good-bye to her boxer friends left behind to a life of misery living outside in a cage with little to no human contact and exposed to all the harsh weather the winter will bring.

Lizzie's first stop was to the vet where she received complete vet care.  When we walked into the vet's waiting room all heads turned to look at poor Lizzie.  People looked at us with disgust probably thinking how poorly we treated our dog.  My little niece whispered in my ear "Auntie, these people are staring at us because they think we did this to Lizzie".   She told me to tell them "we are from Northeastern Boxer Rescue and we are good people".  I told her I would.  When it was our turn at the check in counter I said loudly," Hi, we are from Northeastern Boxer Rescue and we just rescued Lizzie from a puppy mill.  We would like to have her examined".  With that, a huge smile came over my niece's little face.  As we were leaving the vet, she asked me if she could be a volunteer for NBR and I said "you already are, Lizzie was your first rescue!   Children learn compassion quickly.  If only more people would learn to be compassionate there would be no need for BOXER RESCUE!

Please Please tell your friends, family and co-workers about these puppy mills and that this is what they support when they buy a puppy from a puppy mill, pet store or back yard breeder.  Please rescue a dog or buy one from a very reputable breeder that knows how to care for these dogs and has their best interest in mind.  They are few and far between so you must research before selecting a breeder.

Please help us to pay for all the vet care Lizzie will need to get healthy again.  She will remain at the vet until she is healthy enough to go to her foster home.  It is dogs like Lizzie that need Boxer Rescue and it is times like this that Boxer Rescue needs you.  Please make a donation to help us help Lizzie.  Pictures will follow shortly!

Taking an easy dog from someone who has to move and rehoming him is not a huge challenge. The challenge is transporting and caring for dogs like Lizzie, Griffin, Dora, Champ, Deuce, Kenzy, etc.. The challenge is finding the funds to help the dogs in need of medical care.

Thatıs where YOU come in. We need donations to cover the medical bills for these dogs. Remember we get no public or private funding. We rely on adoption fees and your donations to cover our expenses.

All the money goes to the dogs.
