"
Baxter"
I visited Baxter at the kennel today, and am delighted to be able to report that we were able to bring him out of the run and play with him! He finally let us get a leash on him (he's been very frightened) and now that his ear mites are dead, he's not so sensitive about people touching his head and ears.
He came out and was eager to meet everyone in the office, jumped up to give kisses, and cheerfully peed on the counter (my fault; I didn't get him out right away)! When he came back in from his walk, I gave him many biscuits, which he sat for. I also got him to lay down, and shake. He was marvelous, and really playful, but it's obvious whoever had him before allowed him to chew on them. It's in the manner of playing, but since he's a full size dog, it will alarm the uninitiated, and kids, so Baxter won't be going into a home with small children.
I decided at the end of an hour or so that he was comfortable enough with us to let me clean his ears. The kennel staff helped distract him with biscuits while I cleaned and medicated his ears, without incident. He retrieved a ball over and over; he just doesn't give it back right away, but will hold onto it while you hand-wrestle it out of his mouth; then wait for you to throw it again. I think Baxter will be ideally suited to someone who is willing to devote plenty of time to him, work with him on his training and teach him to keep other peoples' hands out of his mouth! He's a doll, though, and in the right hands will blossom into a wonderful lifelong companion.
Baxter has not had a lot of
training in his short life, and will need to go with an experienced owner or
one willing to enroll him immediately in obedience classes (both dog and
owner). He's really friendly and fun-loving, but has no manners to speak of.
He stood on the counter at the vet's office, and didn't mind
"marking" the corner of the wall to let newcomers know he'd been
there. Whoever gets this cutie will have a best friend for life, though, and
I don't think you'll be sorry. The vet was very pleased with him too. Sorry
for the poor quality of the pictures; it was freezing outside, and we all
wanted to get back in the car!!

I have four children ranging from 3 years old to 18 and he is gentle with them all. He will lay still so the baby can pet him and he will jump all over the 18 year old when she returns from the Dormitory for the weekends. He has become very attached as we have to him. He was abandoned in NJ and we rescued him. He was skin and bones, and head-shy. He is now filling out nicely and not so head-shy. We are being evicted January 1st, due to having a dog. I am not able to find a home soon enough, that will allow me to keep him. We are being forced to find him a new home.
Ideally it would be great to have a foster family to care for him until we can buy a home but I am all for him having a wonderful new family as well. As long as he is loved, that's all that matters." As you can see, Baxter's mom loves him dearly, and wouldn't part with him if she weren't being forced from her home.
