Duke - posted 6/9/99

55 lbs, birthdate ?/97

Adopted 6/18/99

History: Duke came into the rescue program in May on a "dangerous dog action" from an area shelter.  He had basically been left to do as he pleased and roam at will most of his life.  Of course there were complaints (there is a leash law in this area) and he was picked up numerous times.  Each time his owners would come and pay the fee to bail him out.

Complaints had also been filed for cat, bicycle and jogger chasing.  Rumor has it that he has killed one cat but has never been aggressive towards people, apparently just runs along with the joggers and bicycles.  The Animal Control Officer had two choices; 1) return him yet again to his owner (who was adamantly demanding his return) or 2) file a dangerous dog action.   The action was filed and there were three possible outcomes. The Judge could decide to 1) euthanize the dog, 2) give the dog back to the owner or 3) turn the dog over to a responsible third party (that's where the ACO was hoping that Boxer Rescue would come into the picture).  Luckily, the Judge awarded custody of Duke to GVBR and he has been in one of our foster  homes since.

Vet Report:  Duke is neutered and is current on all vaccinations and rabies.  He has no known health problems but is missing some teeth.

Foster Home Report: Duke has been doing fine with the dogs and other animals at his foster home.  He is very gentle with the puppy and has no interest in the parrots even when they fly to the floor or the horses running in the pasture!  He thinks he is "Super Dog" as he can leap a 4 foot fence in a single bound!  He only does this when we are on the other side and then comes right to us.  We are working on correcting this behavior but feel he will never be trustworthy left alone in a fenced yard.  He does love to spend time outdoors sunning himself.  The cats living in the barn are of great interest to him and we have used this in his obedience training.   Duke loves balls and can often be seen trying to convince someone to throw one for him.  He is totally housebroke - no accidents at all!

Although Duke grew up with children, he will not be placed in a home with small children due to his history.  He should be fine in a home with other dogs but no cats.
