"
Sissy"
Sissy was in a shelter for 2 1/2 months before being taken in by an all breed rescue. They kept her for 4 months in hopes of finding her a home but they were unable to treat her medical conditions and asked for help. We knew Sissy tested positive for heartworm. She also had mastitis that could not be controlled, and was having false pregnancies that aggravated the condition. We were also told that she had skin lesions that the vet thought were possibly cancerous.
As soon as Sissy arrived in our rescue program she received a complete medical workup including chest and abdomen x-rays, complete blood count, biochemical profile, EKG, ultrasound, and other tests that were warranted after her physical exam. Sissy was indeed heartworm positive. Luckily, besides the heartworm, there were no indications of any other serious ailments. Her breasts are grossly enlarged due to over breeding and are filled with cysts, and will require the complete removal of at least one breast. However she will need to recuperate and gain her strength before this can be done. Her skin has many pressure areas that we hope will improve with time and a cozy bed, but nothing indicates that these lesions are cancer.
We have already treated Sissy for her heartworms and she will need a quiet environment for the next four weeks. We want to give her time to recover and then we will address her other medical issues and have her spayed.
In spite of her lifetime of neglect she is an amazingly affectionate and sweet girl. Sissy has won many hearts along her journey, and I am certain she will continue to impress everyone who meets her. She is now on the road to a better life.
Thank you Mark, Maria (and the entire staff of Meadow Veterinary Hospital), Jamie, Robyn, Shannon, Daniela, Vanessa, Aimee, Pam, Melissa, and all of you who offered your help, followed her story, and alerted us to Sissy's plight. Below are some of the comments from the kind people who helped transport Sissy from VA to our vet in NY:
Shannon: Yes, Sissy was a wonderful first cur for me! She was a complete doll the entire time, every now and then she got up front to sit with me and get some love. She is beautiful! Thank you all for a wonderful experience!
Daniela: What a sweetheart she is!...As I was pulling away from picking Sissy up from Shannon, Sissy pawed at the window and cried after Shannon - she had already bonded!...She was so well behaved during the ride. As Shannon said, she slept most of the way but would pop her head up every so often to check out the scenery. Not much to see on the Turnpike in New Jersey, so she'd just plop back down. ...I wish her all the very best!
Vanessa: Hi all, Just wanted to let everyone know that Sissy is at the vets now. She is one of the sweetest dogs I ever met. Content to look out the window and rest her head on your shoulder! What a doll. Poor thing looks like she's been through a lot. She got to NY on schedule. ...What a sweet disposition. I really hope she finds her forever home. It seems so terrible especially when these dogs are so good. Kinda makes you wonder what it is they did to those who didn't care enough for them.
Please complete our adoption application if you can provide Sissy with the extra love and attention she justly deserves. She is definitely worthy of a special home that will try and make up for all she has missed.
