"
Topper"
5-12-2000 The foster family Topper has been staying with for the past
week has decided to adopt him! They say he is a wonderful dog, and has boxer
wiggles for everyone he meets. Topper still continues to show signs of dog aggression, but will be working on that with his new parents, and will
receive obedience training. His new name is "Cassius," and he is very definitely loving life in a real home of his own.
A million thanks to Boxer Buddies, who found this wonderful home for him, and to all those who have contributed to make his happy ending become a
reality. Best of luck, Topper - we love you!
3/21/00 - Topper is scheduled to be neutered
today, and will ready to go home after that. Since we've had quite a few updates, I thought you'd
all appreciate a summary of what we've observed so far: Topper arrived with us
after being picked up as a stray, so we no nothing of his former living conditions. While clean in his kennel run, he was not familiar with
house manners, so we believe he was probably a yard dog. He is NOT good with
cats, or anything small and furry. He has shown some aggression toward certain dogs at the kennel, and for this reason, we believe would do
best as an only dog. We have not seen him around children enough to form an
opinion, but due to his size and strength would not recommend him for children.
Topper is very affectionate, and loves attention. He can be stubborn when he chooses to, and will require an owner who is willing to put in the
time and effort needed to train him. He is extremely intelligent and fun-loving,
and I have no doubt will do beautifully with an experienced dog owner who has time to spend with him. I don't believe he'd be good in a home
where the owners are off at work all day. If you believe you are Topper's "dream
home," please complete the on-line application and be sure to mention him by
name, so that a copy will come to my attention. Topper and I hope to hear from you soon.
3/5/00 - Couldn't wait to share these new pictures of Topper with you!
He is doing great, and as you can see, filling out really nicely. You can see
the little shaved patch on his back (one on either side) where he got the heartworm injections, but other than that, he's looking like a million
and feeling terrific! Here he is, posing with his good friend Toni at the kennel.

- Topper is doing wonderfully, after his heartworm treatment. He's eating well and looking great, and is full of energy (must be the
macaroni & cheese)! During our short walk yesterday he saw a squirrel,
and nearly pulled me up the tree after it! I don't think I've ever met such a
strong dog. It will still be another two or three weeks of restricted activity while he recovers completely, and then he'll be neutered. I
hope to have some new pictures to post soon - keep checking!
2-20-2000
- Topper is home from the vet's office, and doing beautifully with his
wonderful foster home!
He is already putting on weight and looking much, much better.
He loves being inside where it's warm and safe -just goes outside
long enough to do relieve himself, and is then eager to get back inside.
He is very sweet, and they all love him at his foster home.
He still needs some work on house manners, though, as he recently
elected to help clear the table after dinner (just the chicken, not the
plates!).
One step at a time.
Topper would like to thank you all for your thoughts, prayers and
donations.

- Got
word back today that Topper is treatable, so we're going forward.
The vet said he has a slightly elevated liver enzyme, but that could
be due to the heartworm. They
also said he has a very slight heart murmur, but said he's probably had that
all his life (somebody else I spoke to felt that could have come from the
worms...) So they're keeping
him tonight and tomorrow night, and I should be able to pick him up, if all
goes well, on Friday. They said
he's young and strong (an understatement!), and are estimating his age at
around 2, so they definitely recommended treating him. I'm
so relieved.
2/14/00 - While everyone else is receiving hearts and flowers on
Valentine's Day, Topper's heartworm test just came back positive. We are checking into prices and the best method for treatment, and will be
getting this taken care of as soon as possible. In the meantime, if anyone would
like to make a donation toward the care and treatment of this special sweetheart, please e-mail us at savaboxer@hotmail.com.
Thank you for your support, and Topper asked me to be sure to wish you all a
Happy Valentine's Day!
